Across seven minimalist compositions, Ümlaut constructs immersive sonic spaces from fractured tape loops, isolated synthesizer frequencies, musique concrète, dissonant percussion, unstable drones, and extended passages of calculated silence. Rather than offering atmosphere as comfort, these works treat sound as architecture, revealing spaces that feel simultaneously physical and psychological. Inspired by the sonic language of avant-garde cinema and experimental electroacoustic practice, each composition unfolds like an unseen film—not a soundtrack accompanying images, but one capable of generating its own. Narrative is suggested rather than stated. Sounds emerge without explanation, disappear before resolution, and leave behind traces that linger in the imagination. Silence becomes an active presence, shaping the contours of each piece as profoundly as the sounds themselves. Tape manipulation, microtonality, industrial textures, and silence function not as effects but as compositional materials. Fragments drift in and out of focus, drones shift almost imperceptibly, and fleeting gestures interrupt extended passages of stillness. What once unfolded in fragments and interwoven vignettes is here distilled into a 60-minute arc—unbroken, patient, and alive—where time itself becomes elastic, dissolving into a slow and luminous becoming. The genesis of the work reflects its essence. Jeff Düngfelder began by shaping a foundational environment: a longform expanse of tape loops, electronics, and shifting layers of processed sound. This initial gesture was less a composition than a terrain—an atmosphere suspended in motion, rich with space and possibility. Into this living field, Michel Mazza entered, responding intuitively with electric guitar, electronics, and a deeply attuned sense of form. His improvisations do not sit atop the foundation but permeate it—bending, refracting, and reimagining its contours—until the distinction between origin and response disappears entirely. What emerges is a true synthesis: not a dialogue, but a transformation. The identities of both artists dissolve into a shared current, where sound is continuously reshaped, reabsorbed, and reborn. Textures bloom and recede like breath; tones flicker at the edge of perception; fragments of melody surface only to slip back beneath the surface. There is a quiet, almost gravitational pull to the music—drawing the listener inward, encouraging a state of attention that is both meditative and fluid. Like the album’s artwork—where translucent forms overlap, merge, and evolve in soft gradients of light and shadow—Metamorphoses exists in a state of perpetual transition. Nothing is fixed. Boundaries blur. Shapes become gestures; gestures become space. Warmth and density give way to air and suspension, only to gather again in new and unexpected configurations. The music moves as water moves, as wind reshapes the surface of a landscape—subtly, persistently, without urgency yet never still. In this sense, Metamorphoses is not simply a composition, but a process unfolding in real time.
